The Kids Who Think They Can Change the World: Why Children Need to Dream Bigger

I have been teaching children aged 10 to 15 for more than twenty years. In that time, I have watched thousands of children have ideas — genuinely interesting, sometimes remarkable ideas — and then do absolutely nothing with them. Not because they lacked ability. Because somewhere along the way, they had learned, quietly and thoroughly, that their ideas were not the kind of thing that led anywhere.

That learning rarely happens through a single moment. Nobody sits a child down and tells them that their thinking does not matter. It happens through accumulated small signals: ideas met with gentle dismissal, questions redirected toward the correct answer, creative impulses channelled back into the existing structure, and the consistent implicit message that the role of a student is to receive and reproduce what already exists — not to generate what does not.

After two decades of working specifically with children on entrepreneurial thinking, I am convinced that the most important thing most children are missing is not knowledge, not skill, and not even confidence in the conventional sense. It is the belief — practical, grounded, and based on real experience — that their ideas are worth exploring. That something they notice could become something they act on. That the gap between "I have an idea" and "I did something about it" is crossable by them, at their age, with what they currently have.

That belief, once established, changes everything. And the absence of it explains more about why intelligent, curious children grow into adults who wait for someone else to solve problems than almost any other factor I have observed.

Why "Change the World" Is the Wrong Frame — and the Right Aspiration

The Steve Jobs quote that opens much of the conversation about entrepreneurial thinking — "the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do" — is genuinely inspiring and genuinely misleading at the same time, depending on how you use it with children.

Inspiring, because the core insight is true: the disposition to believe that things can be different, and that you might be the person to make them different, is one of the most consequential mindsets a person can develop. The research on this, from self-determination theory to studies of entrepreneurial cognition, is consistent: people who believe their actions can affect outcomes behave differently, persist longer, and produce more creative and effective work than those who do not.

Misleading, because "change the world" sets a scale that makes most children feel that they cannot possibly be relevant. A twelve-year-old hearing that phrase typically thinks of Elon Musk or Marie Curie. The gap between where they are and where those people ended up feels unbridgeable. And a gap that feels unbridgeable produces the same result as a gap that is genuinely unbridgeable: the child does not try.

What I have learned from twenty years of working with children on entrepreneurial projects is that the right frame is not "change the world." It is "change something." Notice one thing that does not work well. Think about one person who has a problem. Imagine one improvement that does not yet exist. Try one approach to see what happens.

That scale is accessible. And accessibility is what makes the difference between an aspiration that energises and one that paralyses.

What Children Actually Do When You Give Them This Kind of Permission

I want to describe what I observe in practice, because the abstract argument is less persuasive than the concrete reality.

When children are placed in genuine entrepreneurial learning situations — not simulations, not simplified role-plays, but real open-ended challenges where their thinking determines the direction — something specific happens in the first few sessions. There is an initial period of discomfort. Children who have spent years in environments where the correct answer is always available are genuinely disoriented by the experience of not having one. They look for the answer. They ask the teacher what they should do. They wait for someone to define the path.

Then, when it becomes clear that there is no predefined path, something shifts. Slowly, and then with increasing momentum, children start generating. A child notices that the school cafeteria queue system is inefficient and starts asking whether there is a better way. Another notices that younger students in her neighbourhood have nowhere safe to play during certain hours and begins imagining what a solution might look like. Another, who has never shown particular interest in any school subject, becomes absorbed in a problem related to food waste that he noticed while helping his family clean up after a meal.

In every case, the catalyst is the same: permission. Not encouragement, exactly — encouragement without permission produces a different and less durable effect. Permission. The experience of being in a context where their observations matter, where their questions lead somewhere, where the gap between noticing and doing is genuinely expected to be crossed.

Children who develop this experience at ages 10 to 12 carry something forward into everything they do afterward. Not a skill set, exactly, though skill development is part of it. A relationship to their own agency. A quiet expectation that when they see something that does not work, there is something worth asking about what they could do.

The Specific Thinking Skills That Entrepreneurial Education Builds

I want to be precise about what "dreaming bigger" actually develops, because the phrase can make it sound vague when the underlying cognitive development is specific and well-documented.

Problem identification. The ability to look at a situation and articulate precisely what is not working, why it matters, and who it affects is a genuinely learnable skill. Most people — including most adults — are poor at it. They see symptoms (the queue is slow, the students are bored, the process is frustrating) without being able to identify the underlying structure that produces those symptoms. Children who practise this — who are regularly asked to move from "this is annoying" to "here is specifically what is broken and why" — develop analytical clarity that transfers across every domain they enter.

Hypothesis generation. Once a problem is identified, entrepreneurial thinking requires the ability to generate multiple possible approaches rather than defaulting to the first idea. This is not natural. The brain defaults to the first plausible solution and stops. Deliberate practice in generating alternatives — in asking "what else could work? what would happen if we approached this from completely the opposite direction?" — trains a more flexible and productive cognitive habit.

Reality-testing and evaluation. An idea that cannot be evaluated against real-world constraints remains a fantasy. Children who learn to ask "who exactly would use this? what would it actually cost? why would someone choose this over what already exists? what is most likely to go wrong?" are developing the evaluative rigour that separates useful creative thinking from mere ideation. This is one of the most significant skills entrepreneurial education develops, and one of the least present in conventional schooling.

Persuasive communication. An idea that cannot be communicated to another person in a way that makes them genuinely understand and care about it is effectively worthless, regardless of its quality. Children who regularly practise explaining ideas to audiences who did not ask to hear them — who have to earn attention rather than be given it — develop communication capacities that classroom presentations to supportive teachers never reach.

Iterative learning from failure. The entrepreneurial relationship with failure — not as verdict but as information — is one of the most durable and valuable dispositions a child can develop. A child who learns that an idea that does not work is not evidence that they cannot think, but evidence about what the idea needs to change, develops a relationship with difficulty that makes them more capable across every domain they encounter.

The Question That Changes Everything

There is a specific conversational move that I have used thousands of times with children, and that I teach parents and teachers to use, because its effect is consistently significant.

When a child presents an idea — any idea, however unlikely it sounds — the default adult response is evaluative. "That's interesting, but..." or "That might be difficult because..." or, more damaging than it sounds, an enthusiastic "That's great!" that the child immediately recognises as courtesy rather than genuine engagement.

The move that produces something different is a question: "Interesting. How could we make it work?"

This question does several things simultaneously. It signals that the idea is being taken seriously enough to explore rather than dismiss. It shifts responsibility back to the child — they now have to think rather than wait for evaluation. It frames the challenge as a problem-solving exercise rather than a viability judgement. And it opens a conversation that, if followed through, develops every one of the thinking skills I described above.

The child who hears "How could we make it work?" has to consider who the idea is for, what resources it would require, what obstacles it would face, and how those obstacles might be overcome. Even if the idea ultimately proves impractical, the thinking process it generates is far more valuable than the quick dismissal that would have ended the conversation in thirty seconds.

I have watched this question change the trajectory of ideas that started as "I want to make an app that helps people find lost pets" into genuinely developed concepts with clear problem identification, specific user research, and working prototype plans. The original idea was not brilliant. The thinking process it generated — because an adult asked "how could we make it work?" instead of explaining why it would not — produced something real.

Why the 10 to 15 Age Window Is Critical for This Development

This is not simply a developmental psychology observation. It is something I have observed directly and consistently over twenty years.

Children aged 10 to 15 are at a specific developmental stage where the cognitive capacity for abstract reasoning, hypothetical thinking, and perspective-taking is emerging and consolidating. They can think about ideas that do not yet exist. They can model how a situation might unfold. They can consider the perspective of people whose lives are different from their own. These are the cognitive prerequisites for entrepreneurial thinking, and they are developing right now in children this age.

They are also at a stage where the habits of thought formed during this period become significantly more durable than those formed either earlier or later. The ten-year-old who develops the habit of noticing problems and asking what could be done about them carries that habit forward in a way that is genuinely difficult to develop for the first time at twenty. Not impossible — but significantly harder, because you are working against years of established patterns that point in a different direction.

Every year between 10 and 15 that a child spends exclusively in environments that reward receiving and reproducing information, without significant exposure to open-ended problem-solving and genuine creative initiative, is a year of that developmental window passing. I say this not to alarm parents, but because it is true and because parents deserve to understand it when they are deciding how to invest in their child's development.

What This Looks Like at Home: Practical Things Parents Can Do

Parents do not need to create a structured entrepreneurship curriculum at home. What they need to do is change a small number of conversational habits that, repeated consistently over time, produce genuinely different outcomes.

When your child notices something that is not working, ask rather than explain. "Why do you think it works that way?" "What would you do differently?" "Who else has this problem?" These questions take thirty seconds longer than providing the answer. Over a year of consistent use, they produce a child who habitually asks those questions themselves.

When your child has an idea, ask "How could we make it work?" before "That won't work because...". The first question is almost always more productive than the second, even when the idea is genuinely impractical. The thinking the question generates matters more than whether the idea itself is viable.

Allow your child to experience the natural consequences of small decisions. A child who decides how to spend a free afternoon and discovers that the choice led to boredom has learned something about their own preferences and about decision-making that no amount of adult direction can provide. Let them experience the feedback loop of their own choices wherever those choices are safe to make.

Take their ideas seriously enough to engage with them specifically. Not with generic encouragement — children recognise courtesy immediately and it teaches them that their ideas are not really interesting. With genuine curiosity: "Tell me more about how you think that would work. What would someone have to do to make that happen?"

The Shift That Matters Most

After twenty years, I have come to believe that the single most important thing entrepreneurial education does for children is not teach them a specific skill or develop a specific knowledge base. It shifts their fundamental orientation to the world — from passive to active, from consumer to potential creator, from "someone should fix this" to "what could I do about this?"

That shift is visible in children's behaviour within weeks of genuine entrepreneurial learning exposure. It shows up in how they talk about problems they encounter. In whether they walk away from things that do not work or ask what might be changed. In whether they present ideas or wait for someone to validate them first. In whether they treat failure as a signal to stop or as information about what to try next.

These are not personality traits children are born with or without. They are dispositions that develop through specific kinds of experience, in specific kinds of environments, with adults who respond in specific kinds of ways. They are learnable.
